A Nate Berkus Boot Camp is Tougher Than it Sounds

“I like things that remind me of where I’ve been.
Who I’ve loved. Who I love. And where I want to go.” – Nate Berkus

As I jumped into the week 1 of the whole “O You Boot Camp” challenge, immediately I became stuck. Project quicksand, quicky sinking into my stress and fears and unable to find a place to start. Early in the day I sent out this Tweet: My @Nate_Berkus OYou Challenge is more challenging that I thought. How do U get 2 UR home’s potential w/o feeling like UR just cleaning? #HELP.” Then, I remembered this from another life…”just lean into it.”

When my life was about corporate marketing and high tech products, there was a motivational speaker who was brought into one of our conferences – Vince Poscente, an Olympic Speed Skier and highly energetic man.  What I took from that day was that everybody is scared…but sometimes, you just have to lean into it and the momentum will take you down that hill.  So, I leaned into the O You Nate Berkus Boot Camp week and you know what…I moved from my quicksand quickly…and into the day.

Multi-tasker that I am, I did a few things to get me on track for my week.  First, I did the easy stuff.  EDIT. I looked around and decided that this wasn’t a cleaning challenge, it was an editing challenge. Do I have things around me that fill me up with love?  More importantly, do I have things around me that make me sad or fill me up with dark energy?  As I looked around, I asked myself these questions and was surprised – mostly because I have a lot of things that don’t really do either.  So, easy enough – the dark energy things were put into a donation box and I’m still working on editing out the neutral where needed.

Starting to feel a little pep in my step for this challenge, I found the time to run by Kohls and bought a few linen napkins that I thought would be perfect for our napkin pillows.  It was THAT easy.  Then, we made a quick stop at Target where I found some bed pillows on sale (I’m hoping I can sew them in half and get them to the right size for these decorative pillows) AND I just couldn’t pass up another great set of 4 Target napkins (= 2 more pillows).  At this point, I’m getting a little excited.  I can see the shift in my soul.  I’m getting there.  Project pile is ready…and all the bags from Kohls and Target are currently decorations in the corner.

Day 1 ended with a burst of decorating energy that went to my bedroom.  Rumaging through the linen closet, I added some fluff to the bed and gave it a whole new fresh crisp life.  Then, editing the surroundings, I found myself changing out frames and putting my OWN photography into them.  Quickly, I could feel that this added love in a frame to the room.  A whole new experience.

So…here are the lessons that I learned today…

  • EDIT out everything that is sitting around your life that brings you dark energy. It’s taking away your happiness.
  • DON’T be afraid to jump in and get started.  It’s not always easy, but you always feel good for trying.
  • I really need to splurge on a set of Nate Berkus sheets in the future.  I saw him on  HSN one night…and I think I REALLY need them!

So, Day 2 plans for Boot Camp?   Today, I’m taking my editing to a couple of other rooms in the house and maybe….just maybe I’ll be getting to a major project of re-doing something old…and hopefully changing it into something that I like or maybe even love.  That one will take a little longer, so the instant “YEAH!” will not be there for me…but that’s ok.  It’s a journey….not a sprint but a week long journey…and I’m leaning into it…and it feels good.
