Rosie Recap – Actor Dermot Mulroney on “The Rosie Show”

Although I miss seeing the lively staff, The Rosie Show is finding a new niche with the one-on-one segments. If I recall correctly, Rosie always wanted a nighttime show and her show has found a nice balance between both daytime and evening. In fact, OWN needs to start airing a repeat of the show at 11pm every night.

The interview encompassed many aspects of Dermot Mulroney’s life. In fact, Rosie and Dermot have been friends for a long time. They both met back in the 80s at a party thrown by Melissa Etheridge just as they both were becoming rising stars in the business. Despite being a respected actor in a ton of films, he never really reached hardcore paparazzi status…lucky him! So he has been able to live the dream and somewhat of a normal life. Rosie and Dermot talked about getting divorced and their surprise at finding love again. Now the father of three, he couldn’t be happier.

In the interview, his hidden talent was exposed. Like many children who had to choose and instrument to play (back when public schools had real music programs), he opted for the chunky cello. Lugging it around on the bus and the occasional teasing didn’t stop him from loving the enticing instrument. In fact, he was good enough to play professionally. With all things that require a commitment, he had to make a choice to dedicate more time to the craft. As a young teen, he wasn’t ready to sacrifice 4 hours a day to music. It is clear that he still loves playing, but by closing that door…others opened leading him to his success today. As a special treat, he entertained us with a little Bach. I never would have guessed he was an accomplished musician. Despite being nervous, he was great.

Eventually they got around to talking about his newest film, Big Miracle, which is based on a true story. His character is involved in a beautiful love story. While preparing for the part, he had the gift of being able to read handwritten love letters of the actual couple who began their relationship over the phone in the middle of crisis. Can’t wait to see the film! His segment came to a close with a game of “I Never”…without the drinking. A cute way for Rosie to find out a few new fun facts.

Following Rosie’s interview with Dermot, she brought Top Chef, Stephanie Izard to cook up a little something special.  I covered her interview in a separate article.
