Freedom Riders Ride Again for Oprah’s OWN Network?

In April, California attorney Joe Gerbac will make his first appearance on a NEW Oprah Show on the OWN Network.  NO…he won’t he hosting a show!  He appears to be taking part in a show with a historic theme.  Now….the guess would be that Oprah is revisting the Freedom Riders.  LOVE the idea!

Fifty years ago, the Freedom Riders took a historic ride from New Orleans to Jackson.  The goal…to end racial segregation in bus and train terminals in the South.  Gerbac recently told his story to the Santa Maria Times.

In the summer of 1961, Gerbac and a group of 15 others emerged from an Illinois Central line in Jackson, Mississippi.  Gerbac “still remembers ‘Captain Ray’ of the Jackson police.  He ordered the integrated group to disburse three times. They did not move. Captain Ray ordered them taken to the city jail. After a brief trial they were found guilty, not of a federal civil rights violation, but of disturbing the peace. They were sentenced to 30 days.”

After serving his time he went on to become a lawyer AND a conservative.   He told the Santa Maria Times…“I’m probably the only conservative,” he says of his Parchman mates who he will see soon. “In Chicago, I’m going to keep my mouth shut.”  Probably a good idea!

UPDATE(3/31): O has put out the word…they are looking for Freedom Riders! If you are one, contact them on the OWN Network.
