oyou boot camp challenge

As we ready ourselves for a new OYou experience in a few days, this lesson from OYou 2011 has been a light in my life over the last year.  Turned on…tuned in…riding waves. It was so strong, I wanted to share it again as we get ready to be swept up in a new OYou expereince.

I am an artist by nature.  I didn’t always know it…or embrace it…even though it was right in front of me. Left mind dominates. Emotions rule my life…and when emotions rule your life, it’s like a roller-coaster of waves.  Get ready to ride the wave of highs and lows and quick turns and sudden stops.  Oprah and Martha Beck at the OYou conference told us the importance of riding the waves in life…and it’s now clear that learning how to balance yourself and staying positive are going to be lifelong lessons.

Martha Beck told us, “It’s the way to navigate the change in your life…ride the wave.  Look inside or on the path you have traveled for lessons to teach you how to ride the way without being swept away.”  And Oprah told us…”About the wave…you ride the wave…don’t get scared.”

Each day like so many other left minded people, I ride my wave through life and do my best.  Sometimes I look for rainbows…sometimes I try to be the rainbow…and sometimes…I just try to stay standing…because when a wave knocks you down…it can be hard to get back up.  But, like with everything in life…it gets easier each time and I am worth getting up each time.  By the end of the journey, I will be a champion wave rider…this I know for sure.  Get up today!  Ride your wave with passion and fun and laughter!  You too can be a champion wave rider!  Let’s enjoy the journey together!

OYou 2012 Boot Camp: Wrapping up Fashion Week – Week 8

Life brings lessons in surprises and sickness too. This past week when fashion and style were the focus of our OYou Boot Camp, I felt anything but glamorous. Coming off the tail end of the flu, I had forgotten how beautiful you feel carrying around a box of Kleenex and living on cough medicine and Tylenol.  But each day, I looked for that illusive “style voice” that has eluded me for years.  In all of the looking, I found something a little special…my journey.

Early on in the week I found myself doing something that I thought I would never do. In stuffy nose and fever desperation, I went out to the drug store in disguise.  I ventured out of the house “undone” – with no makeup and my hair pulled back, hiding behind my glasses and red eyes.  While I think that the PERFECT fashion must have is a full length mirror so that you always know what you look like before leaving the house, I did know and I still made the run and during the trip, realized my whole journey tells my style story.

In my 20’s, I never left the house without being ready for anything.  Ready to meet Mr. Right or even Mr. Right-Now, I looked great. You never know what the day will bring you, so I presented my best 2o’s self to the world and was on the go all the time and ready.  With boundless energy and style, I walked a little more confidently…and was a lot more curious.  Life was amazing and fun and there was never time to sleep.

In my 30’s, I relaxed…a little.  I was still always “ready” but I had redefined what that meant.  With a career in focus and designer suits and shoes in tow, I had work and play clothes.  I let my hair down a little…but worried a little less about being comfortable and more about being on trend.  I lived for Nordstrom sales and enjoyed a day of shopping with the girls.  I collected fashion and in turn, different looks for different moments.  My eclectic style of what my life was vs. what I wanted it to be showed from the color coded sections in my closet filled with work, casual, and a “new with tags” area of clothes that someday, I would wear.  I was searching for change… and I could feel it coming.

By the time I had reached my 40’s, life had already taken me to the opposite side of the world and changed.  Ditching the high-stressed, high-paced lifestyle and slowing down to see the world on my own time and without wearing a Gucci watch, my style voice fell a little silent…looking for how to respond to the change in lifestyle and the change in me.  So while a closet of designers hang in my closet in dust proof bags, I’ve left the world of classic lines and tailored jackets for a life less complicated.  A simple selection of “relax-ware” works well when working from home – the “peace” t-shirt for when you are making a statement of “no drama” to the world, a vintage Mickey Mouse shirt for those believe like me that you  “can’t have a bad day in a Disneyland shirt” and the classic black tee for all occasions works well on those hard to choose days.  With a great wedge or flip flop  …I’m set to go.

But this week, looking at this journey started me wondering…what does this all say about me? Where is that fashion hungry female who shopped the trends and looked for the perfect look for any moment? …Only to make me realize…she is right here.  Feeling a little more relaxed in her own skin, feeling a lot more confident than the 20-something me, a lot more focused than the 30-something me and understanding now that style and fashion are all part of your journey.  Your style voice comes from the life that you are in, the roles that you are playing and the place from where you operate.  Fashion and style confidence doesn’t come from a closet full of hangers or from the pages of magazine.  It comes from being who you are at any given time in  your life.  Your style is how you wear your life.  Clothes, shoes and everything else are just the accessories.

Fashion is constantly evolving just as our views do. What customers scammer for one season, they may not be caught dead in it the next. As Heidi says, you’re either in or you’re out! Although most of us aren’t as harsh as the catwalk critics, designers have been known to find trouble. Racist comments, unhealthy endorsements or inappropriate actions can cause the friendliest of customers to outstretched nails and eye designers like prey. Boycotts of products aren’t unheard of but what bothers me is that it takes “bad” behavior for consumers to send messages with their wallets. Although I am grateful that we do, I wish we did the opposite as well. There is no arguing that money is power and consumers as a whole have a tremendous amount of it. Instead of waiting for a fashion faux pas, why not put our money to work?

For instance…everyone likes a simple tee. Whether you get them from Nordstrom or Target, we all have a dozen or so in our closets. Think of the difference we could make if the next t-shirt you purchased supported a cause. Imagine if we all tried to purchase with the intention of giving our money to something that personally matters to us. I am not saying that everything you buy should represent your causes, but when you can…why not consider a few of these stores?

  • Beulah London – Elegant dresses that help bring awareness to human trafficking, as well as help the survivors. http://www.beulahlondon.com
  • Baby Gagoo, Gagoo FatKat - A clothing line with heart and soulfulness.  This new line of ECO friendly clothing with something for kids of all ages gives back in  a big way for a little company starting out.  For every pair of pajamas sold, one pair will be given to a child in need at Nkosi’s Haven in South Africa. The Baby Gagoo line also helps to support SOJOURN, which is a safe haven for battered women and their children in LA. https://gagoofatkat.com/store/
  • Tom’s – Started in 2006, this shoe company has a mission.  Here’s their slogan – “With every pair you purchase TOMS will give a new pair of shoes to a child in need. One for One.”  If you are looking for a little fashion for the feet, take a look.  http://www.toms.com/
  • Same Sky – Same Sky wrap bracelets are made by Rwandan women who survived the 1994  genocide.  100% of the proceeds are reinvested into the company to buy more  materials and employ more women artisans. http://www.sameskyshop.com
  • Global Girlfriend – Supporting women worldwide rise up out of poverty while a portion of the sales also go to end world hunger.  It’s a win-win with this one.  https://www.globalgirlfriend.com/store/ggf/site
  • LSTN Headphones - For every product purchased, LSTN gives the gift of hearing to one person in the world. WOW. What a gift to be in the business of giving. One purchase and you directly change someone’s life. Amazing. http://www.lstnheadphones.com
  • Akawelle - True one of a kind jewelry that will touch your heart and change the world. http://www.akawelle.com/Jewelry.php
  • Radiant Cosmetics – Cosmetics that help to bring awareness for human trafficking and to provide resources for those on the forefront of change, as well as to the victims. http://radiantcosmetics.org
  • Jusani -  Clothes for men, women and even a few things for the fur family. $5 of every order is donated to provide food, supplies and help in the adoption of homeless pets. http://jusani.com/shop
  • (Red)  – One of our favorite shops supports the work of ONE.org.  Here’s a piece that we simply love…their (RED) Beaded Bracelet. http://joinred.shop.musictoday.com/Product.aspx?cp=55840_56520&pc=1OAM31

So while fashion can be found absolutely everywhere, next time you start to think about adding to your collection, consider adding a piece that brings with it a tremendous amount of good energy. Shop for a cause…and fill up your soul while you fill up your shopping bag!  And…if we missed any of your favorites, leave a comment and share them with us!  We always have room for more great energy in our life!

OYou Boot Camp Week 7 – Hope in Finances

by paula on September 11, 2012

With only 39 days left before OYou 2012, we arrive with a screeching halt at our OYou Boot Camp Finance Week.  Suze Orman’s mantra has been “Live below your means but within your needs.” This year, we are stripping it down and going back to basics just to make sure that we have all the steps down…and somewhere in there, we are hoping to find some hope in finances.

So as we move into week 7 just in time to buy our ticket or not buy our tickets to OYou 2012, we arrive a little tired and a little behind.  It seems that this year may have given us an extra day because of Leap Year but all the rest of the months have shrunk just a little in size.  What we were able to accomplish last year seems to be taking a little more effort this year.  Bottom line – this OYou Boot Camp that we’ve committed to still requires the diligence and committment of putting yourself on the list…when some weeks it’s all you can do to just to make it through the week.  Truth be told – it’s kicking our butt! Perhaps this is part of the lesson - sometimes you have to jump off your own to do list and give yourself a break…and sometimes it’s absolutely okay to slip the date…but don’t slip the committment you make to yourself. You are worth more than that…

So, this week we dive into the cold, hard world of finances in search of a little hope. Get ready…last year was a tough one…this was the week we decided we couldn’t make it to OYou!  This year…we are already half way there thanks to the Montage Beverly Hills and their sponsorship!  With that as motivation and inspiration, we feel a little more ready…

Here are our 3 challenges for this week:

  • Financial Close-Up & Back to Basics – Time to emotionally and financially to take a good look at where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go in our financial life to learn from the past, access the present and make some plans for the future.  This will be requiring going on a money diet…and seeing the future through the forest.
  • O Magazine Advice – This month, O Magazine has a great article from Suze Orman just in time to do a little financial stretches for OYOU  - 9 Small Financial Steps That Will Pay Off Big in the Future.  It’s time to really take a look at these steps and find at least one or two to implement into our lives
  • Create a Financial Vision Board – Let’s do this!

We hope you follow our journey and are inspired enough to join us.  Welcome to week seven of our OYou 2012 Boot Camp Challenge. We’re over half-way through…now, it’s all down hill! Take the time to pay attention to your life and your finances which in turn will take care of your mind, body and spirit.  This week we are focusing on the green stuff…because while money doesn’t make the world go round, it definitely buys you a better seat on the marry-go-round…and doesn’t everyone deserve to live your best life in your best seat possible?
