Your OWN Show

90 Seconds

Lia Keith

So, I have a confession to make.  Yesterday, I saw a twitter exchange that made me blind with jealousy.  In fact, the jealousy that I felt was so strong; I couldn’t catch my breath for a minute.  I was shocked by how I felt because I can’t remember ever feeling that way before.  Thinking back about it now, I don’t remember a single instance of it.  As the feelings overwhelmed me, I thought about firing off some quip or silly or even cutting response, but luckily, I paused and came to my senses.

Somewhere, deep inside me, I remembered Jill Bolte Taylor’s lesson that whatever emotion you are feeling transverses your body in about 90 seconds and that after that, all that is left is the thoughts and remembrance of that 90 second experience.  So, I let that rage, hurt, pain, and jealousy have its course and it consumed me for that minute and a half.  And, oh, how I relished those feelings, embracing all the ugly, base, lowness of them.  Then, I took a deep breath and went still.

For about five minutes, I sat and calmed and quieted my mind and let every negative emotion go.  I realized that I was afraid of those feelings and that side of myself and that, in the past when I have had them, I have stuffed them with something, usually food or denial.  It was incredibly freeing to just give myself that 90 seconds to go where I needed to go and feel what I need to feel.  It was also freeing to not react to the feelings, but to just FEEL them; not hide them away or react in anger or fear; just observe them running their course and know once the emotion was gone, I could look at them clearly and not let them control me.

After the five minutes, and feeling very calm and free, I called my husband and told him I had had a crazy fit of jealousy and it had freaked me out a little bit.  I told him about the exchange and what I had felt and we discussed why we thought I had felt that way.  What we figured out was that I had coveted what was going on in the exchange and I had been jealous that someone was receiving something that I wanted.  So, after more discussion, I was able to channel some of those negative emotions into a life lesson that will further me along my journey of transition.

I know I am ready to move onto something different from what I’ve been doing for the last twenty three years. In fact, last May, after seeing the movie I AM, I had an epiphany that further focused that vision.  I made the decision that I was going to take the next few years to get myself moving toward what I am going to do next. What has been harder to figure out, is just what my next chapter is going to look like.  In the last year, I have learned many lessons and gone on many adventures, but the future has still been foggy and my vision has not been clear.  That moment of jealousy, because I was present enough to feel it then examine it, gave me a glimpse of what I wanted.  I want a future that looks something like what that exchange looked like and my jealously actually served me by letting me see it.

Many philosophers have said that you manifest what you need in your life; that you need to examine the things that make you angry, fearful or jealous because that is also a part of you.  What I realized by that encounter was that often when negative emotions came up, I pushed them away thinking they represented something that didn’t serve me, but of course, everything is here to serve you, even seeing a side of yourself you don’t particular like.  That 90 seconds was there to bring my calling into clarity, to bring forth the fire I needed to get motivated and focused.

What have you dismissed, rejected, or ignored because you didn’t like how it made you feel?  How many times have you reacted in anger, fear, or jealousy without looking at WHY those feelings were brought to the surface?  How often have you buried a part of yourself that came roaring forward because that wasn’t the image you wanted to believe about yourself or show the world?  Embrace those 90 seconds, feel them fully without judgment, then get still and figure out how they are here to serve you.  Then get about the business of serving them and live a more authentic life.

Tonight, Zach rolls in to Sin City and the City of Roses and opens our eyes to a few new experiences.  A visitor of both of these great cities, both have won my heart and taken my money, but Zach’s ability to let me see the “newness” in somewhere that I have been a few too many times reminds me that enjoying something is all about perspective and attitude.  Throughout Zach’s entire itinerary, that is the one thing that he never forgot to bring with him – an awesome attitude!  So, next time you are dragging your suitcase through the airport or dreading a trip that you’ve made hundreds of times, change your attitude and find 5 new things to do.  Open up your life to having a great time…and you WILL have a great time.  Just roll with it.   You’ll be glad you did!

Here are Zach’s top five great times for each city. Let’s roll!

Viva Las Vegas Countdown
5. Green Valley Ranch Resort and Spa – Living large in Vegas, Zach gets a special tour with his magic 3 words, ” I know Oprah.”  Wow…and it works!  I always knew Oprah was magical!  A private patio with your own private pool…yes, magical.
4. Looking for Beginner’s Luck - Zach hits the casino for some “21″ lessons and how to become a high roller with some high roller lessons. Zach reminds us from his lessons that Blackjack is a game of math and “you don’t go with your heart because your heart is a loser.”  Roulette asked for no skills…so, luck be with Zach!
3. Jubilee Showgirls – Seeing one of the last showgirl reviews in Vegas, Zach gets the inside, backstage look at what it takes to put on THAT kind of performance.  LOVED it…he’s so funny…
2. The Village Buffet – Time to eat!  Zach’s ready to try the 120 items on the menu…and rolls on in to one of the most famous buffets in Vegas.  With a little bit of everything from a little bit of everywhere, looks like you’ll want to wear your “adjustable” pants.  But if we know Zach, he’s looking for the sweets!

4. Local Brew from the Crystal Ballroom – Taking a local brewery tour, Zach ventures into dangerous territory as he tries out beer…not normally on his “list.”  No drinking and driving Zach!
3. Let’s EAT at the Food Cart! – Zach tours the local food carts with the help of www.FoodCartsPortland.com founder, Brett Burmeister.  Now how fun it that!  Pull up a chair…or roll one up…and let’s eat!
2. Coffee, Coffee, Coffee! - Coava Coffee is making Zach feel extra special with some extra special treatment from Coava co-owner, Matt Higgins.  Serve me up!  This is a MUST stop on my next visit to Portland.  Problem is…you may have a hard time getting me to leave.  I LOVE my coffee!
1. Rock Climbing on Mt. Hood – Zach’s adventurous spirit hooks him up with “Adventures without Limits” and Doug Knighton and Nolan Pavone.  Zach’s thinks he’s ready to climb some rocks but finds out…it’s not as easy as it looks.  But Zach’s spirit is MUCH BIGGER than any old mountain…it’s both amazing and inspiring.  Go climb a rock!  Make mine a little one please…

While OWN tries out different flavors of TV to try to figure out what works best for the network and it’s viewers, they definitely got two shows right -” The Ambush Cook” and “Rollin’ with Zach.”  While the lead into the show might be a little silly with expecting us to believe that Kristina really “ambushes” someone who is unsuspecting, the foundation of the show is great.  Giving people some simple basic tricks in the kitchen will make even a kitchen lover happy and empowered.  Kristina is fearless and that passion is contagious if you watch!  For the last two episodes of this first six in the series, Kristina is bringing the love with sweetness and savory and saving us from eating out!   So, while we wait to find out if “The Ambush Cook” will be coming back into our living rooms, here are the tips that popped out during the last two shows!  Kristina, thank you for bringing your passion and for giving us lessons to last a lifetime!  Next time, take us to Croatia and tell us about all of the exotic foods and flavors…then, teach us to make one of those recipes!  We loved the shows…and can’t wait to see what the world brings to you next!

Tips to remember…

  • You can roast any veggie.  Just drizzle some EVOO and a little salt and go!  Be fearless!
  • Use cooking spray on your spoons when working with sticky stuff – honey, syrup…maybe butter, peanut butter?
  • If the fork goes in easy, then the veggies are done roasting.
  • If you are afraid of oil splattering, remove it from heat and turn off the heat before you turn it over.  Then, turn it back on after.  This would be YOU taking charge.  It’s that easy!
  • Decorate your plate…because the food taste even THAT much better when it’s presented beautifully.
  • Make any recipe your own.  Use ingredients you love.  Just do it!
  • Emersion blender…you just have to have one! It will make your life and clean up so much easier!
  • Most of the time, you can MAKE something just as amazing as you can buy in a restaurant…or better!
  • Mustard maraniade? Try it!  Why not!
  • When you are breading the protein, pound it thin so that the outside breading doesn’t burn before it cooks all the way through!
  • Breading ANYTHING – Flour, Eggwash, Panko bread crumbs.  1, 2, 3.  It’s that easy!
  • Canola oil has a higher “smoke point” so…use that when cooking in a pan.
  • Crispy Nutella Cookies – OMG!
  • Parchment paper is a MUST when making cookies.  Non-stick, easy clean up!
  • Go into cooking with confidence.  You can do it!

This weeks recipes include a great dishes that look restaurant amazing but come from a home kitchen!  For the recipes go to Oprah.com…but if you can’t wait, here are the direct links!  Enjoy!

Episode 5:  The Social Butterfly – Asparagus Salmon Salad, Guiltless Chocolate Mousse , and a bonus with Quinoa Salad

Episode 6: The Restaurant Regular – Mustard Crusted Chicken, Crispy Nutella Cookies and a bonus with  Pan-Fried Lentils

“Anythings possible…and I can’t wait to see what happens next.” – Zach Anner

For months we have waited for Oprah’s Your OWN Show winners to come into our lives and bring us everything they’ve got!  Last night we found out it was well worth the wait.  Rollin with Zach premiered last night on OWN and here is my 5 word review – WOW! You won’t be disappointed!  Host Zach Anner,  who has cerebral palsy (“the sexiest of the palsies”) and an amazing sense of humor, wanted to bring a travel show to the world and in turn has created a series that does more than take us places but inspires our spirit to embrace life!

Each thirty minute adventure countdowns Zach’s top 5 things to do in each city.  In last night’s premier, Zach rolled us into Los Angeles and Chicago from a perspective that we might have missed if we took the journey on our own.  With more than a “sitting down” attitude, Zach runs, jumps, swims, swings and flies into life in each of these episodes with such passion and fun that his joy is contagious and his spirit is motivating.  For all those moments in your OWN life that you told yourself that you couldn’t do it…for all those times that you sat on the sidelines for whatever reason…for anything that you have ever doubted in yourself…Zach will inspire you to not only be your best self and live your best life but to do it with laughter and adventure that you didn’t even know you had!

Here are Zach’s top five countdowns for each city.

Los Angeles Countdown
5.  Go to The Price is Right!  Come on down and visit one of Zach’s favorite game shows ever!
4. The Sweat Spot – Dancing from the soul. Sporting legwarmers and an orange headband, Zach busts a move and dances with 200% of his heart and soul!  Fearless!
3. Millions of Milkshakes – Next time you are in West Hollywood, try a “Handi-Cappuccino,”compliments of Zach  and his love of coffee and cookies!
2.  Venice Beach - Don’t miss the #1 tourist attraction in Southern California.  Don’t blink, because you might miss something.
1.  Surfing (dude) - Topping Zach’s list is surfing in Malibu.  With the organization, Life Rolls On, Zach catches some waves and tells us, “When I was riding that wave, it was amazing.  So fast. So liberating. One of the most amazing experiences of my life.”

Chicago Countdown
5.  Navy Pier – You’ve gotta go to navy pier and you’ve gotta ride the Ferris wheel.  If you are as fearless and fun as Zach, check out the swing too!  Zach on the swing was hilarious!  Fear and fun bring out the funniest side of people!
4.  All the way to the TOP please – Visit the Willis Tower (formally the Sears tower).  103 floors with an amazing view of the city.  If you are brave enough, go to  “the ledge” -  1300 feet above the street and the fear element to the Rollin with Zach show!
3. A real Chicago summertime street festival – Zach visits the longstanding “Taste of Greek” festival and gives us a little “Opa!” and Oprah! Trying a little Greek Saganaki cheese and some dancing too!  Lots of hugs and kisses as Zach tells us, “I don’t know that I’ve ever felt so welcome anywhere!”
2. Visiting the i-Cream laboratory, Zach custom creates his OWN ice cream.  Here, customers can create any color and flavor combo of ice cream that they can dream up!  “Possibilities are endless…”
1.  Water skiing on Lake Michigan…well, a lake  - With  Adaptive Adventures, they are determined to making action sports possible and dreams come true.  Zach’s number 1 thing on his list was to water ski in the lake.  Well, on Zach’s day, the water was a little too choppy for boats – any boats so, but everyone kept that positive attitude and with a great team, the Adaptive Adventures people adapted to the day and found a nearby lake to make this travel adventure happen.  Thumbs up all the way for this!

*Rollin’ with Zach airs with back-to-back episodes on Monday’s begining on December 12 from 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.
