Tensions were running high again this week on Sweetie Pie’s, especially for Tim. With a new baby, a wedding approaching fast and the restaurants everything felt overwhelming. Miss Robbie could see her son winding up and worried about when he was going to pop. “You better blow it out. You’re holding it in too long.”  Unfortunately, you can’t always pause life to take a breath. The Upper Crust was moving fast and things were coming up. A year before when Robbie had purchased the building, she had been told the roof should last about 10 years. Yet there she sat in a room with contractors informing her there was a leak and it could be up to $50,000. Joking she’d be losing her chandeliers, the pressure fell on Robbie. This could be bad.

While Robbie was trying to figure out how to fix the roof, Tim was meeting up with Jenae and the wedding planner, Aaren. Yet he didn’t crack a single smile. “When I see Aaren, I see a person that’s pushing me closer towards death. Not death in the literal sense. Just like death of my single self and Aaren is just helping her push me towards the burial ground which is the wedding.” Clearly Tim was dealing with a lot of issues. He appeared to be getting quieter and angrier. When Aaren told them that they could only invite people who they knew the first and last names of, Tim had to speak out. Calling each other names, Tim and Jenae were quickly reaching a tipping point.

Instead Tim headed off to work trying to leave the wedding drama behind him. If he had it his way, I’m not sure there would even be a wedding. He was totally overwhelmed. So when he arrived to work to find Andre and Charles 4 hours late, he was ready to assert some control over one of the only areas he had any say…work. He may be the manager, but because of his mom…he really didn’t have any power. Despite the fact that Andre and Charles continued to goof around and get paid for doing nothing, Miss Robbie wasn’t going to fire them. She didn’t make waves. However, Tim saw the bigger picture. Seeing them as young men, he was frustrated at their lack of respect and work ethics. That was where Tim snapped. He began with grabbing at Charles physically and then it escalated into a head lock on Andre and soon a punch. It was ugly. Shocked and hurt, Andre stormed off.

Meanwhile, Robbie was enjoying a little time with her grandson, TJ, when Charles and Andre stormed the room. Both of them are upset and Charles on the verge of tears. They spun their story of innocence claiming they hadn’t done anything to cause the problem. In truth, they hadn’t done anything different but Tim wasn’t reacting to the moment…he reacted to the history of all the moments they had done this. As a protective grandmother, Robbie headed down to the restaurant to confront Tim.

“You do not put your hands on anybody. That’s no way to solve a problem.” Amen! There is NEVER a reason to lay your hands on anyone. All you teach is for the person to fear you…there is no lesson in it and no opportunity for growth. Just a bully asserting power over someone weaker. With that said, it was easy to see how Tim’s path led him to this. He just didn’t have the tools to handle all that he was going through. He wanted to discipline the next generation more than his mother had raised him. He felt they needed a stricter environment in order to avoid prison or a life of handouts. Yet for his mother it was simple, “The fist is not the answer.” As Tim claimed that the boys had no control, he was out of control. Angry at his choices, Miss Robbie fired her son.

Finally things are beginning to settle down for the Montgomery family and Sweetie Pie’s. It appeared TJ was finally out of the woods, Jenae’s friends were throwing her a baby shower, Charles was actually working and sharing his desire to go to college. It was a Sweetie Pie’s dream! OR was it? As soon as Charles mentioned he wanted to go to a community college, you would have thought that Robbie would have been relieved – finally he has hope of a future. But it didn’t go down that way. Instead she was the pessimist at the table leaving Tim trying to keep her from shattering Charles hopes. Now…Robbie claimed she was just a “realist” but it was clear that she didn’t think Charles had it in him to make it to classes. “I know where I want to go, I just don’t know how to get there,” he shared with Tim. He wanted to become a veterinarian. It was hard. For a moment, we all saw a new side to Tim as he struggled with the opportunities he sacrificed in order to help his mom. He is a good son…and that can come with a cost. I began to think that there was more to Robbie’s disappointment. Maybe this had more to do with her hoping Charles would grow up and one day join the family business. Maybe that was her dream.

However not all of her dreams were shattered. After over 6 months of waiting, Robbie finally got the call she had hoped for….her construction loan was FINALLY approved! “We’ve got the loan. We’re moving on!” Finding herself pumped full of good energy, she kicked Tim out so he could spend a little time with his son and Jenae. I am certain he felt a HUGE weight lifted from her shoulders once the loan came through. Finally things were moving forward again. TJ was getting better, the new restaurant was back on track and he was planning a date with Jenae. The smiles on their faces as they signed the loan were beautiful. Nothing but joy rising for the Montgomerys!

The date was a great break for both Tm and Jenae – a reminder of how much they love each other. It was a much needed break from all the stress and craziness. In the meantime, Jenae’s best friend worked to pull together the co-ed baby shower and she even hit Robbie up to use her house. Robbie was still riding high on the fantastic news and agreed. When the day finally arrived, storms knocked out the electricity and they had to make due with candlelight. But truth be told, you don’t need electricity to enjoy time with family and those who love you. The only bummer was that Tim had to stay at work to do payroll and missed the event. He would have to settle for pictures and left overs. [read more…]

Every week I look forward to watching Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s. If you haven’t seen the show yet, you MUST. It is truly a heart-warming show about loveing and humorous family and their struggles and celebrations in their lives. Last week Robbie finally caved and bought her nephew Charles a car hoping that would finally put an end to his being late and constant pleading for rides. Well…half of her wish came true. Unfortunately Charles still couldn’t manage to make it to work on time. However, work doesn’t wait.

Tim scored a gig with the City of St. Louis for an event under the arch. They hand-picked 12 restaurants that best represented the city and asked them to serve food at a convention of people who throw conventions. Yes, that means the people who book conventions in the St. Louis have a chance to get to know Sweetie Pie’s. All he had to do was prepare food for 5,000 people. What a great opportunity to showcase their food. Despite feeling overwhelmed, anything is doable for the Montgomery family! Tim had his work cut out for him. Permits, background checks on him and anyone helping out at the event, and so much more! About 4 days prior to the Arch event, Tim finally told his mom about the catering event for 5,000 people. Realizing it was a great opportunity, she hoped Tim would pull it off.

Around the same time, Robbie’s financial advisor, Mr. Bussey, let her know that someone was interested in the building she has been holding on to – the location of the 3rd restaurant where they are having trouble getting the funding for the construction. The offer was for $4 million. It was definitely enough to get Robbie to pause and think. Here she has been paying on a building that she can’t move on. By selling, she’d recoup her cost of the building AND get the money she needs for the construction. But it is more than just a building to Robbie. “This restaurant means everything to me. Nothing black was happening in that area and for me to own a piece of property, I don’t know…I might be the only black to date a piece of property in that area. So it’s not just a building, it’s a piece of history.” She was still hoping the bank would come through and she wouldn’t have to consider the offer.

Frustrated at Charles, Robbie and his mother decided it was time to write him up and suspend him for a week. So who wrote him up? His own MOM! “Charles is a grown man and Charles has to think like a grown man and take care of his responsibilities and not rely on mom to take care of him or Aunt Robbie…” That is tough love. Tears flowed down his face as signed the suspension and his mother had a heart to heart. Hopefully he will take that moment and grow. It was all in love. Here is a deleted scene where Tim confronts his mom about Charles’ suspension.

After 3 days off the job, Charles paid Sweetie Pie’s a visit only to meet the new guy, Dane, which Tim hired to pick up the slack. He was not happy! To smooth it over a bit, Tim offered Charles a job at the event. But when he found out it was for 5,000 people he replied “I said I was gonna help him out a little bit. That is way above my pay grade”. Of course, he was still going to work it! On his way out, he made sure that Dane knew that he’d be back and Dane would be jobless. I wouldn’t be so sure though. The day before the event, Charles called Tim and asked for Saturday off…so he could go out and have a little fun. This kid (actually grown man) has NO concept of family or being a team member. His own family can’t rely on him when they really need him. Tim told him to take the day as his employee shouted in the background. Tim knew – if he didn’t let him off, he may not show anyway. He couldn’t rely on Charles at all. Such a disappointment. Check out this deleted scene about Dane.

The day of the event Robbie showed up to help her son. She took over the banana pudding, the new macaroni balls were in the works and Tim just needed to get cooking the chicken. It was down to the wire, but they were pulling it off. Finally the days of hard work and sleepless nights came. It was clear they were out of their league. They were behind schedule and way under staffer. Tim and 2 other guys from the Sweetie Pie’s worked tirelessly to make it happen. Then the support came. Other workers from other restaurants and the event people all pulled together to help Sweetie Pie’s get up and running. It was a real community and I felt like crying. That is totally happening to me lately – OWN is always making me cry. They may have been late, but they were clearly the crowd favorite. The macaroni balls were actually the hit and Robbie would have been so proud!

As for TJ, he was doing great. Once he took the bottle for the first time, it was only a matter of time until he’d be able to come home. Unfortunately Jenae’s maternity leave was about to expire. So she headed to the doctor and he helped her out by giving her an open-ended letter…so she’d be able to use some vacation to be with her baby. I am certain that was a HUGE relief for the entire family.

Each epsiode, I fall in love with this family more and more. It was a wonderful surprise when OWN announced they were extending the show by 10 episodes. Be sure to set your TiVo and watch each week….it is a GREAT family show and is well worth the time.

Next week…..is all about second chances and whether Tim is finally ready to hold his son!
