OYou 2012 BootCamp Challenge: Organizing Your Life – Week 3
This morning I was awaken by the grumbling of the weather outside and the looming of dark clouds during our typical Florida summer day. As the threat of rain stood up to challenge the possibilities of the day, I laid there cycling through work and life and everything else that came across my foggy mind’s path. Stopping to take in a moment of joy, my feet then hit the floor getting me ready to move forward into the day. Today, towards the top of my list in our OYou organization week is tackling the dreaded junk drawer. UHG. Just thinking about it exhausts me. It’s where every homeless key, screw, rubber band and unwanted item lives in my kitchen. Drawer organization is not a reality in my world…and out of everything that we have thrown into the OYou Boot Camp this is one challenge that I am not looking forward to. My goal – not just the junk drawer but all of the kitchen drawers too. I used to think that 10 drawers in the kitchen was pretty great. Now, I just think it’s exhausting.
So, as I run through my day, I know what I am running towards and it’s daunting enough to have me bolting in a different direction. But I won’t. By the end of the day, my feet will lead me to my kitchen and to this task. By the end of it, I will either be drawer proud or have a huge pile and a headache. Either way, I’ll have stayed true and shown up for myself and this challenge. Sometimes it’s not just about going through the motions. Sometimes, it’s just about showing up and reminding yourself that it’s important to do things for you and your life. This is what today is all about. Wish me luck!

Peter Walsh has said that your house is a metaphor for your life. I realize the clutter in my home is NOT representative of me at all. What I want my house to say is that it is a wonderful, creative, uplifting and stress-free space. With my OYou Peter Walsh week coming to a close, I am going to do one last push to bring my home up to the level I want. WOW- totally flashing back to Nate Berkus from OYou Boot Camp week one about your house rising up to meet you. All I need is to have those 2 come in and strip it down and build it back up. What a dream team! But since that isn’t going to happen, I better get back to work. Before I do so, I want to leave you with more tips I picked up this week from Peter Walsh.
OYou’s Peter Walsh has consititently given us great ideas…all we have to do is implement them into our lives. The trouble sometimes is just getting started. Where to begin? I guess the point is not where, it is the when or the NOW that makes a difference. Even if you walk away with just organizing the books and magazines in the house…it is a start. Personally I’m going to start with the bathroom – the easy win is sure to inspire and encourage me.
Once we are motivated and ready to work, Peter has given us a great technique to move through the stuff – “Sort F.A.S.T.” he tells us.
Fix a time and stick to it. Haul out any item that fits in one of the following categories:
Anything you haven’t used in a year
Stuff that doesn’t belong
Trash
Once you get moving, just allow yourself to keep moving. Committ to your day. Don’t let anything derail you. Whether it is family calling, a box of old letters or an invite to dinner…stay focused on doing this for yourself. You deserve to have an uplifting home; so make it happen! I need to get back to work, but take a moment and check out the video that Peter did for California Closets. It goes over the F.A.S.T. concept a little more. Enjoy!

“More stuff doesn’t make you happy.” – Peter Walsh
If Peter Walsh walked into my house, I know exactly what he would say. “You have a lot of really nice stuff.” His emphasis would be on the words “a lot.” And, as I move through the boot camp that is dedicated to learning some Peter Walsh magic, I’m having a problem - I’m hitting a slump. It feels like cleaning and it feels like it needs to be more. No offense to those power cleaners our there, but cleaning is up there with go to the gym and fill up the gas tank on my list. They may all three be personal policies of my own…but definitely not what I really be wanting to spend my time doing. I keep telling myself, “but wouldn’t it be nice if it was all done and I didn’t have to spend any more energy thinking about it anymore?” That’s the feeling that I’m working towards…
Thinking back, I remember my mom - Supermom. A single, hard working mom of 3 girls, who always seemed to have it organized and together. From the school supplies to the back packs to the lunch money to the laundry…my mom WAS supermom or our house was magic, because it was all done before we walked out the door for the day. Maybe we didn’t have as much…maybe she worked harder…or maybe she worked smarter. I wonder what her magic was?
So today, I’m going to work through the “slump.” I’m going to work harder…smarter…and try to get to the other side, because I know when I do what will be waiting for me. That feeling…it’s all done and I don’t have to spend any more energy thinking about it anymore. My OWN Magic.
