I Have BAITERs

by paula on April 29, 2013

inspiration quoteI have BAITERs.  I didn’t know they had a name until Dr. Phil told me.  I have known them, loved them, and encouraged them with my actions. I have supported them, ran to them in a moments notice and in retrospect, I may have even been one with my choice of words or in the midst of a storm.  I have and have had BAITERs in my life.  NOW…what am I supposed to do with this information?

Last night on Oprah’s Lifeclass, Dr. Phil sat down with Lifeclass students to start talking about life and the lessons he lays out in his new book, “Life Code”…In the hour, he opened the conversation to start talking about different toxic people that show up in our lives that may go unnoticed.  Giving them the acronym of “BAITER,” Dr. Phil spells it out clearly what these people are set out to do to your life…take it over.  A BAITER stands for the following kinds of people that show up in your life – Backstabbers, Abusers, Imposters, Takers, Exploiters, and those who are Reckless with your life and with theirs.

From the live taping of the show on Monday to the network airing on Sunday night, I’ve been walking around with all of this information and with questions - I have had BAITERs in my life.  Some are still lingering around. Am I something of a BAITER magnet?  And if I am, how do I stop the pull…and an even bigger question, can you love a BAITER without letting them wreak havoc on your life?

Throughout my life, friends, family and even a fiancée have shown up as regular people only to creep over and cross the BAITER line somewhere in the process.  And while they may have slipped into destructive behavior, here’s my role in all of this…I didn’t do anything about it…at first.  I allowed for people to use me, take advantage of me, and be reckless with my open heart, my generosity and my forgiveness.  The man I was going to marry once said to me, “Well, I know I can screw you over and win you back.  I’ll just keep trying really hard and sooner or later, I know you’ll take me back.”  Today that declaration would receive a raised eyebrow, a sarcastic “Reaaaaallllly?” and then me walking out the door.  Done.  Back then, when I was amidst my BAITER lessons, I think I laughed it off…but only on the outside.  Inside, I raised an eyebrow, thought “Reaaaallllly?” and my heart started walking out the door.

Once I stopped minimizing the actions and I started recognizing and trying to stop letting this behavior creep into my life, the consequence of learning the lessons became the closing off of my heart.  Protected…but tucked away in darkness…this is how I handled the BAITERs in my life.  That was until recently…when I realized that closing off my heart only takes away the sunlight that it needs in order to grow…and that I am strong enough to see bad behavior, realized I cannot change it, and turn the corner and keep on walking and moving forward in life.

So while Lifeclass and Dr. Phil give me more to think about and more labels to attach to my life experiences, this I know for sure…BAITERs will show up in your life.  Everything in life is drawn to the love and light that you put off into the world…just like the plant leans towards the window with a yearning for the sun to grow and be strong.  Love and light are natural magnets for everything.  But with your love and light, open your eyes and when you see a BAITER show up in your life, raise an eyebrow….and take your light and your life towards a different direction.  Really.

Oprah's LifeclassTonight, Spring classes are back in session as Dr. Phil sits down with Oprah in Chicago for a filming of Oprah’s Lifeclass. Saying a little “thank you” prayer for the perfect timing of this event for us, Oprah and her OWN team are taping a two-hour session of Lifeclass at 7/6c tonight that will be live streamed around the world via Oprah.com and on Facebook.com/OWNTV.

As Dr. Phil’s sits down for his first appearance on Oprah’s Lifeclass, we are sure to get some “tell us like it is” moments and some great life lessons to add to the notes that we’ve already taken on Lifeclass.  Like no other show on television, Oprah has opened up the stage to an interactive life course – master level for those searching to step up and into their best lives.

Join us and other Lifeclass alumni tonight as we virtually sit next to each other in class.  But if you can’t make it tonight, OWN will be airing the show in the network lineup in the near future.  Take in an extra deep breath and an extra dose of daily meditation because here comes Dr. Phil…and when he steps into class, who knows what might happen.

When I was young, one of my favorite stories that my mom would read me was The Little Engine That Could.  Each night, my mom would tell me the story…sometimes by memory when she couldn’t find the picture book…and always, the words that echoed over and over to my young mind were “…I think I can, I think I can, I know I can…”  A lesson in moving forward and believing in yourself and your direction, even when other’s may doubt you…just keep going and don’t give up…because you will make it up that mountain.  This simple childhood story reminds me a little of OWN…and it’s so wonderful to see them churning up the steam and climbing up, up, up!

For the last few weeks, OWN has rolled out amazing new programming to the world and in turn, brought with it some amazing lessons.  Long ago in the early days of the network, we used to use the hashtag on Twitter, #ChangeTheChannelChangeYourLife.   Growing up with Oprah and her “brand” we knew the impact from a young age – that empowering yourself with knowledge and understanding opens up your life and heart to the world around you.  For the last two years, I would like to think that I listen more closely, walk a little lighter, choose my words more carefully, forgive a little more easily and love with an open heart.  And much of this has to do with what’s in my life and since day one of the network, OWN has been in my life.

From early on, we knew that OWN programs – the REAL Oprah content that’s sprinkled among the Discovery filler – was different.  Simply listen and it could change your life.   The new programs over the last few weeks have raised the bar even higher.  Here’s what you’ve been missing if you haven’t been around…

With Super Soul Sunday, Oprah opens up discussions and reminds us of some of the basic lessons from The Four Agreements and the movement of energy and the hunger of the soul and more, introducing us to spiritual leaders and igniting our minds and our hearts to light up and see the possibilities of living our best life.  Like clockwork, my body wakes up each Sunday morning and turns to the lessons of the day…as if my soul has been waiting all week to drink up the lessons.  The world is thirsty and this program is the prefect answer to that thirst.

Traveling with Oprah’s Next Chapter, homes are opened up and we are invited into family dynamics, and behind closed doors and into the lives of many who we see, but don’t always really SEE.  Make sense?  With Oprah sitting down on a purple couch or talking over the laughter or asking the hard questions, we see people as people…human, not always perfect, sometimes much funnier, often even more approachable and most of all the show always seems to capture the heart of the person.  Even in the most difficult episodes, there is humanity there as people open up to Oprah and to the rest of us to reveal that they are just like the rest of us…lexcept with a lot more stuff.

As Oprah’s Master Class comes back to the network, it feels like home.  My second favorite series on OWN (just behind Super Soul Sunday) this hour of traveling through someone’s life – the twists and turns, ups and downs – all to bring us full circle into a pool of lessons for personal success .  A college level master class on life and what has worked and not worked for some.  Listening carefully, the journey always reminds me of one thing – we all have lessons throughout our own lives…each and every one of us is living a Master Class right now.  Are we paying attention to our own lessons?

In a new reality program, OWN takes us into the South with Blackboard Wars, and has immersed us into the process of standing up and trying to make a difference in the school system, in young lives, and in the world.  As we watch these amazing teachers and leaders use every ounce of their spirit and soul to change the world and as we see the real world that some of our students – the leaders of tomorrow – are faced with, it touches the soul and makes an imprint on hearts.  When programs start a conversation – a real conversation that can make a difference in the world – this is amazing.  This is what this program has done.

Finally, Our America with Lisa Ling hasn’t missed a beat as Lisa jumps into some of the most interesting conversations and areas with an open mind and a blank notebook.  Knowing that their stories will be treated with respect and honor, Our America goes into some of the most curious communities and opens up some of the most important topics to start conversations and get us thinking.  For as long as I can remember I have always said, “You fear what you do not know or understand.”  Lisa Ling and her team are opening up our eyes and helping us to understand.  While we may not always agree, by the end of the hour we are educated and enlightened.  A beautiful series that reminds us what the highest level of journalistic television  should look like and how it should touch our humanity.

As OWN keeps moving up the mountain, we will be here watching and cheering and taking in the lessons that have changed our lives.  We hope that you find OWN on your TV or watch some of the programs offered at Oprah.com.  You too may realize the unexpected gifts that show up with the programs…and really, who doesn’t like presents?!

Back in 2002, Nate Berkus received a call that would change his life. In a recent one-on-one interview he took us on that journey from owning a design business to being one of Oprah Winfrey’s experts to becoming a syndicated talk show host to his latest sit down with Oprah’s on Super Soul Sunday.

The 41-year-old reflected on the experience of being asked to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show, saying, “I was sitting in my offices in Chicago and I’d met one of Oprah’s producers and become friendly with them about a year and a half prior, but I’m not the type of person that’s particularly strategic when it comes to friendships. After a year and a half I received a phone call from a different producer who was at the show, who asked if I wanted to makeover a small space.”

It’s the invitation that any entrepreneur would have dreamed about. As Nate recalled, “I remember thinking that it was going to be a lot of work and I remember thinking that it would be an incredible opportunity and how much preparation I would need to go into it. So of course I said, ‘Sure, of course, I’d be happy to. When is it and where is it?’ And they said it would actually be this afternoon and it’s in Boston.”

Certainly it was a demanding request. But the ambitious young businessman jumped at the challenge. He confessed, “I sort of panicked and then I started thinking about it and I said, ‘Let me think about how to achieve this and give you a call back.’”

Never one to pass up a challenge, Nate figured out a plan. “I sat and I thought about it and I thought the only way to make a makeover like that work with all this construction is to pair up with a national company that has local crafts people and trades in each town. So I called the producers back and I said, ‘I think we can do it but I certainly can’t bring my electricians and carpenters and mill workers and plumbers with me from Chicago. But if someone from ‘The Oprah Show’ can call a home improvement chain and find out if we can work with one of them then I think we could get a whole group of people there tomorrow morning by 10 o’clock and I’ll just do the design on the fly. And it was exactly that. It’s exactly what we ended up doing.”

The rest is history, after three whirlwind days and a trip to the emergency room from exhaustion, [read more…]

The worldwide news that Lance Armstrong is sitting down with Oprah for a heart to heart on Next Chapter has started making headlines worldwide.  Announced via Twitter and press release on Monday night, OWN will be airing a 90 minute special on Thursday, January 17th – taking Next Chapter out of it’s Sunday time slot and bringing the interview to the world as quickly as possible.  For this special interview, OWN will be airing the episode not only on its cable channel but it will also be available worldwide on the web via Oprah.com.

While the talk and speculation of what ground will be covered will be banter with the media over the next week, the truth is that the world knows Oprah’s style.  She doesn’t shy away from the hard questions…and there is a reason why Oprah’s team have already scheduled an interview that hasn’t even happened yet (to the best of our knowledge) for 90 minutes.  Oprah and Lance have a lot to talk about.  And Oprah’s all about asking the questions that the world wants to know.  This is one interview that will talked about and referenced during Lance’s legacy – no matter what is said.  And it’s one interview that you do not want to miss.  Good luck Oprah.  Good luck Lance.  Enjoy the moment and leave everything you have on the field.  And for the rest of us, don’t forget to watch January 17th at  9/8c or watch live on Oprah.com.  We know we will be watching #LanceOnOWN.
