Letter

Many of us watched Ram Dass’ film, “Fierce Grace” on Super Soul Sunday, where we were introduced to a family that had carried a grief that we pray no one ever has to know. Their daughter, Rachel, had been murdered at a young age of 11. As they struggled to deal with her passing, they found comfort in a letter they had received from Ram Dass. After many requests, we wanted to share this letter in hopes that it will help other families deal with their loss. Please pass this link on to anyone who may need it.

Steve and Anita,

Rachel finished her brief work on earth, and left the stage in a manner that leaves those of us left behind with a cry of agony in our hearts, as the fragile threads of faith are dealt with so violently. Is anyone strong enough to stay conscious through such teachings as you are receiving? Probably very few. And even they would only have a whisper of equanimity and spacious peace amidst the screaming trumpets of their rage, grief, horror and desolation.

I can not assuage your pain with any words, nor should I. For your pain is Rachel’s legacy to you. Not that she or I would inflict such pain by choice, but there it is. And it must burn its purifying way to completion. You may emerge from this ordeal more dead than alive. Or something within you dies when you bear the unbearable, and it is only in that dark night of the soul that you are prepared to see as God sees, and to love as God loves.

Now is the time to let your grief find expression. No false strength. Now is the time to sit quietly and speak to Rachel, and thank her for being with you these few years, and encourage her to go on with her work knowing that you will grow in compassion and wisdom from this experience. In my heart, I know that you and she will meet again and again, and recognize the many ways in which you have known each other. And when you meet you will, in a flash, know what now it is not given to you to know: Why this had to be the way it was.

Your rational minds can never understand what has happened, but your hearts, if we can keep them open to God, will find their own intuitive way. Rachel came through you to do her work on earth, which included her manner of death. Now her soul is free, and the love that you can share with her is invulnerable to the winds of changing time and space. In that deep love, include me, too.

So much love,

Ram Dass

A special “thank you” to the Ram Dass Tape Gallery (a non-profit community dedicated to preserving and distributing Ram Dass’ teachings) for allowing us to share Rachel’s letter. Although their letter differed slightly, we adjusted it to be word-for-word with the film. To visit their site, click here.

“do not let great ambitions overshadow small success”

it’s important to stop and look at your accomplishments…to remind yourself of where you have come from and what you have done.  so, as a reminder to ourselves…here is a little recap of the journey and what this year has brought…

remember in the past 360+ days of the Daily OWN existence, these things happened…

  • we have launched a website
  • we have met some amazing people and shared some great conversations
  • we’ve watched HUNDREDS of hours of OWN television.  seriously…we are OWN EXPERTS here.
  • we’ve finished an amazing 1075+ thoughtful articles and content on OWN and recaps from a viewer perspective.
  • we have written and recapped almost every single show on the network…hoping to reach out to those who have missed them or don’t get OWN…and giving them lots of reasons to take a look…
  • we have given thoughtful feedback and show ideas to the OWN world…even if only to the OWN angels who read our posts
  • we have constructed AND completed an 11 week OYou Bootcamp challenge during the OWN light summer schedule
  • we have attended Oprah’s Lifeclass…taking 5 weeks of careful notes to share with the world…passing them on carefully and with great intention
  • we have shared personal stories and enlightenment and opened ourself up to the world…little by little…
  • we have been noticed by O Magazine Editor at Large, Gayle King…with a lovely trip to OYou 2011 and a beautiful note from Gayle to remind us of it…
  • we have been followed by wonderful OWN and Harpo people…even hugged by a couple…
  • we have been told we’ve been seen (“everyone knows who you are…everyone…”)
  • we have talked to editors at O Magazine and even had a photo include in it!
  • we have been through 3 website designs already and we keep outgrowing them faster than we can type…
  • we have built our OWN inspiring community…and it’s still growing
  • we have changed our lives and our world…in small and big ways…
  • and we have learned how to dream again…in small and big ways too!

so…while we want to just RUN all of the time, we have to remind ourselves…don’t rush… just give it time.
as we put wonderful energy and lessons and information out into the world… it WILL come back…it already IS…

thank you to all of our readers who have been on this journey…
in this next year…it’s going to be even more amazing
because as OWN begins to build on their foundation, we will be ready…
to take the lessons out into the world…and share the vision…
living the lessons…bringing the inspiration…sharing with the world one article and blog post at a time.
being the change in the world that we want to see.  being the inspiration in the world that we want to have.
the journey is a long road…but worth ever single step.

always be inspired,

God in a Fortune Cookie

by paula on November 27, 2011

today, i found myself in small e.e. cummings type and sending a pep-talk to oprah.  life…how funny it can be.  anyway, i thought i would share this personal note…because there are so many of us that feel the same way about OWN and even more of us who forget about the small successes along the way.  if you do, remember “God in a Fortune Cookie.”

good morning Oprah…

i saw this in a fortune cookie…first i thought what a great gentle way for God to remind me to be patient with the world…then i thought of you and your network.

“Do not let great ambitions overshadow small success.”

remember in the past 330 days…
you’ve launched a network
you’ve finished (and in an amazing way) an epic show after 25 years
you’ve graduated girls and sent them off to college
you’ve taped at least 5 new series of shows that i can count – (Behind the Scenes, Master Class, Lifeclass, Lifeclass Live and Oprah’s Next Chapter)
you’ve  taken on a new job as Commander and Chief at OWN
you’ve spoken at trade shows, OYou events, given interviews
you’ve created a college level course and lectured millions of students…changing their lives
you’ve made yourself available to your friends and to the world…
all in a short time…you and OWN have done so much …your success is amazing and anything but small…but i know your ambition for it…but even more, this i know for sure…

OWN will be all you want it to be.
just give it time to grow.
you can’t rush your beautiful roses in your garden…
even with the powerful california sun
or the gentle mist from the pacific ocean….
just give it time to grow…
i can see the flower starting to open…
i can envision what it may look like…
and it’s going to be even more amazing that you can imagine.

i’m not sure you will see this…and never in a million years did i think i’d be sending YOU a pep-talk letter…but if I’ve learned anything of my OWN journey in this last 330 days…you never know what you may be doing in life…but always follow your heart.  i hope this lifts you just a little…by knowing that there are lots of us out here that are supporting you and OWN…even God in a fortune cookie.

have a wonderful WONDERFUL day,
