Unfaithful

OWNs Unfaithful – Love it or Hate it

by paula on July 21, 2011

OWN’s series Unfaithful is making me feel…well, like being unfaithful to OWN and changing the channel during Monday’s lineup. No offense, Unfaithful makers. I think you have an interesting concept and your intention is clearly to show how to survive this kind of betrayal…but I’m a quick learner and I got the lesson from the first one or two shows. Now, each show just reminds me of friend’s stories and boyfriend baggage I’ve left WAY in the past…and just makes me feel sad.

But for those still finding the lessons and watching, read on for some highlights courtesy of the OWN network.

OWN Video: “Jenni & Brian and Audrey & Bob and the descriptions from OWN – After years of infertility, Jenni and Brian hit a wall in their marriage and Jenni finds comfort in the arms of a friend. Life as a pastor’s wife begins to leave Audrey unsatisfied and depressed – until an affair with a younger man lifts her spirits.”

OWN’s Unfaithful gives us more stories of lives unraveled…shadowed by hints of hope. Below are some video clips of this week’s episode. Thank you OWN for sharing. I’m still looking for the inspiration here but only finding sadness in these dark and troubled relationships. I’ll keep looking…until I can’t any longer.

Here are the couples and some of the stories this week. [read more…]

Another week…here are the Unfaithful statistics and the shared videos from the Oprah Winfrey Network.  Help us now if this is at all representative of who we are as a society.  This is the reality show that you DO NOT necessarily want to be on…but the good news is that if you are, that means that your relationship has survived the betrayal.  So, it’s a little bit “Oh NO, I’m soooooo sorry but hey, congratulations though…”

Here are this weeks stats for the episode: [read more…]

As Unfaithful: Stories of Betrayal continues on OWN, I am still not connecting with the hour long series that uncovers people’s lies and outlines their stories of infidelity.  But…some of the statistics are interesting (in like, I wonder where they got them…) so here they are:

  • 68% of women in the United States say they would have an affair if they knew the would never get caught.
  • Recent studies suggest that there is infidelity in 8 out of 10 marriages in the United States.
  • Studies suggest that 62% of married men have affairs with someone they work with.

For those interested, OWN has posted some video clips and bites from the show and are letting them be shared so they are all posted below – Thanks OWN!  These 1 to 2 minute bites will give you the taste of what the hour looked like.  It’s up to you if you want to take in the whole “Unfaithful” meal.  If you do… [read more…]

Each week, this “Unfaithful” series takes viewers into the lives of “infidelity survivors” and thier messy liasons. This reviewer is not loving the cheating…or the show. Sorry OWN, but you are missing the mark for me. I only ask that you change the time slot that it is in so that it coincides with something like “Glee” or “The Next Food Network Star” so that it works for me a little better…but I am sure this is working for some people…ok…well, I’m not totally sure, but someone must be watching…

For a quick recap, here are a few videos from OWN that give you a bit of an idea what you may have missed. The two couples highlighted have chosen at some point in their relationships that cheating or self satisfaction was more important to them than their spouse and their relationship. No judgement. Just an observation. These couples are strong and forgiving…because not everyone can survive this and get to the other side. Their stories show that some relationships can survive infidelity…and possibly give hope to those that are in this situation…and wondering if they can get to their own “other side.” [read more…]

For those watching Unfaithful on OWN, this little checklist from the Dr. Phil website may be just the questions that you need to ask yourself and your relationship.

“Dr. Phil has seven questions to ask to determine if your cheating partner deserves a second chance.

  1. Is this an isolated event or a pattern?
  2. Does your partner own his bad behavior or make excuses for it?
  3. Does he have insight into how he’s hurt you or is he oblivious?
  4. Is he sorry for his choice or sorry he got caught?
  5. Is he willing to clean up his act, or is he in denial?
  6. Is this out of character or does he have an insensitive gene?
  7. Is this a legacy or new behavior?

The previous seven questions you asked of your partner. One major question you have to ask of yourself is: If you reinvested in this relationship and allowed yourself to trust, and your partner cheated, do you have the depth and strength to recover from it, or would you be emotionally bankrupt? ”

Unfaithful takes you through a relationship…and the journey of better and worse. All of this leads ultimately for these couples to one of them being unfaithful. The show documents the journey in bullet points – giving you highlights of the relationship to help recognize that the process of infidelity is not always simple. At least that is what the show is trying to get across it seems – that there are many things that lead a person to cheat. Feeling undesired, stressed from a death in the family, from a birth of baby, too many demands, too much pressure, the need to feel heard., missing the excitement and the chase and the lust…put anything on the list that you deal with in life or in any relationship…and these are part of the excuses of infidelity.  Relationship dishonesty…and then

As I sat down to watch this show, I kept telling myself, “Be open, Be open,” realizing that I was already closed. In my mind, I could hear Gayle King saying, “Mr. Cheater Cheater pumpkin eater.” and I kept wondering, “Why does OWN have this show on the network?” but I guess the statistic that “experts believe that 24% of men have sex outside of marriage,” probably speaks to why they are airing this show. That means there are a lot of women out there that understand this anguish and pain…and a lot of relationships that have been destroyed by one person not being able to control themselves.

“Studies suggest that only 31% of marriages make it through infidelity. These are the stories of relationships that survived the betrayal.” [read more…]
