Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s was all over the place this week. Well, actually Tim was all over the place and everyone else spent their time trying to refocus him…even J.R. As the new restaurant got closer to opening, the momentum was increasing and all the pieces were coming together. Unfortunately when that happens, the little things start to add up and soon you find that you have a long list of little things that have to get taken care of. Most importantly was Miss Robbie trying to secure an additional loan to take care of the roof, patio and incidentals. Luckily the bank was able to extend her the money and she was able to move forward.

With that good news behind her, she focused on opening auditions to her employees for the Upper Crust entertainment. Although most weren’t exactly what she was looking for, she did find a standout. However the biggest surprise was Jenae and friends who entertained her and Tim with a little “We Are Family” in hopes of getting her husband’s attention. After a few Joe Jackson moments during practice, Jenae donned a fancy dress and headed to the audtion. Completely catching Miss Robbie and Tim off guard, smiles filled the room. She was looking for Tim’s attention and she got it! It was very sweet.

As his mom’s dreams were finally coming to fruition, Tim was focused on finding his own dream. With his first gig behind him, he had caught the bug. He wanted to break into the music business and make his own dreams come true. With the wedding date pushed back, he turned his attention to a building that was hitting the market…an old nightclub. His thoughts were that he could get famous musicians into the club and he could open for them all. Meeting resistance from all around him, he decided to call in his best friend J.R. He knew that he would be on board. However, to his surprise, J.R. opposed the idea. He realized it had very little to do with their band…and would actually take away from their time to do music. Shocked by his response, Tim realized maybe it was too much too soon. Who would have thought that J.R. would be the sensible one? Lucky for Miss Robbie and Jenae!

Things were cooking this week on Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s! With the opening of Upper Crust just around the corner, Miss Robbie’s to-do list could have stretched around the building. At the top of the list was sifting through applications to find the perfect staff for her newest baby. She needed professionals and had concerns about taking any of her cooks with her who seemed to be lacking in discipline. If they wanted to make the move…they needed to be stepping up.

While his mom was consumed with Upper Crust, Tim walked into the house and the news that the wedding planner was on her way over. As she shared the news that the wedding date was going to have to be pushed back because the facility wasn’t available, Tim couldn’t hide the smile. That is VERY concerning. Jenae didn’t seem too bothered, but the subtle clues are getting louder. Hopefully with a little more time, Tim won’t feel so overwhelmed and can enjoy the process a little bit. When Jenae finally told Miss Robbie it was clear that she was concerned about Tim getting cold feet.

However, the excitement began to sizzle as Miss Robbie sat with the President of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Don Jones. Sharing with her that he had many inspired students who were interested in working with her. He invited her to give a demonstration at the school and even talked her into bringing her famous sweet potato pie. Can you blame him? As she worked through her recipe of macaroni and cheese, she kept her eye on the crowd. She was looking for talent and possibly her new cooks.

Walking around Upper Crust with his best friend J.R., Tim realized his mom was living her dreams and he had put his on hold. So despite all the stress he was under, he and J.R. were going to hit it and make their musical dreams come true. Heading into a studio, they wanted to lay down some tracks and wanted a professional to help him. By picking the name, Bipolar, he hoped it would leave the door open to an array of music. After hearing what they had to offer, they were offered a gig to open for Rick Ross, a hip-hop hero to them. Suddenly the restaurant and the wedding were tabled and everything was about their one chance. After practicing like crazy, they got some bad news…they weren’t going to be able to perform. They didn’t give them a reason they cancelled them, but it just wasn’t going to happen then. It hit Tim hard. Once riding on a high, the fall was hard. Gigs happen and they don’t. Robbie reminded him that he’d have other opportunities. “If you ain’t strong enough to have them doors slammed in your face, you ain’t going to make it.” She went on to remind him that God hadn’t a bigger concert in store for him. Such a great mom! [read more…]

Tensions were running high again this week on Sweetie Pie’s, especially for Tim. With a new baby, a wedding approaching fast and the restaurants everything felt overwhelming. Miss Robbie could see her son winding up and worried about when he was going to pop. “You better blow it out. You’re holding it in too long.”  Unfortunately, you can’t always pause life to take a breath. The Upper Crust was moving fast and things were coming up. A year before when Robbie had purchased the building, she had been told the roof should last about 10 years. Yet there she sat in a room with contractors informing her there was a leak and it could be up to $50,000. Joking she’d be losing her chandeliers, the pressure fell on Robbie. This could be bad.

While Robbie was trying to figure out how to fix the roof, Tim was meeting up with Jenae and the wedding planner, Aaren. Yet he didn’t crack a single smile. “When I see Aaren, I see a person that’s pushing me closer towards death. Not death in the literal sense. Just like death of my single self and Aaren is just helping her push me towards the burial ground which is the wedding.” Clearly Tim was dealing with a lot of issues. He appeared to be getting quieter and angrier. When Aaren told them that they could only invite people who they knew the first and last names of, Tim had to speak out. Calling each other names, Tim and Jenae were quickly reaching a tipping point.

Instead Tim headed off to work trying to leave the wedding drama behind him. If he had it his way, I’m not sure there would even be a wedding. He was totally overwhelmed. So when he arrived to work to find Andre and Charles 4 hours late, he was ready to assert some control over one of the only areas he had any say…work. He may be the manager, but because of his mom…he really didn’t have any power. Despite the fact that Andre and Charles continued to goof around and get paid for doing nothing, Miss Robbie wasn’t going to fire them. She didn’t make waves. However, Tim saw the bigger picture. Seeing them as young men, he was frustrated at their lack of respect and work ethics. That was where Tim snapped. He began with grabbing at Charles physically and then it escalated into a head lock on Andre and soon a punch. It was ugly. Shocked and hurt, Andre stormed off.

Meanwhile, Robbie was enjoying a little time with her grandson, TJ, when Charles and Andre stormed the room. Both of them are upset and Charles on the verge of tears. They spun their story of innocence claiming they hadn’t done anything to cause the problem. In truth, they hadn’t done anything different but Tim wasn’t reacting to the moment…he reacted to the history of all the moments they had done this. As a protective grandmother, Robbie headed down to the restaurant to confront Tim.

“You do not put your hands on anybody. That’s no way to solve a problem.” Amen! There is NEVER a reason to lay your hands on anyone. All you teach is for the person to fear you…there is no lesson in it and no opportunity for growth. Just a bully asserting power over someone weaker. With that said, it was easy to see how Tim’s path led him to this. He just didn’t have the tools to handle all that he was going through. He wanted to discipline the next generation more than his mother had raised him. He felt they needed a stricter environment in order to avoid prison or a life of handouts. Yet for his mother it was simple, “The fist is not the answer.” As Tim claimed that the boys had no control, he was out of control. Angry at his choices, Miss Robbie fired her son.

Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s began with big decisions to be made. With The Upper Crust coming to life, Robbie knew she had to have the perfect menu items to debut her newest restaurant. Although she believed that there was no need to fix what wasn’t broken, Tim was pressuring her to bring a little change.  Yet Miss Robbie was quick to point out that she started the restaurants with her mother’s recipes and more importantly “that’s Miss Robbie’s cooking that’s got everybody lined up around the block.” After bickering a little bit, they decided to hold a family cook-off. As Tim worked the room and starting getting creative, he claimed his intention was all about getting the best food for the new restaurant.  I suppose it wasn’t a bad idea since they were looking to incorporate a culinary school inside the new restaurant.

However The Upper Crust was on everyone’s mind, including Charles. Looking for the easiest path to money, he decided it was time to get some schooling…to become a bartender. Unfortunately he has competition as other employees were hoping for the same thing. When Robbie was sick, she found Charles by her side at home. What did she think about the idea? “Charles is a trainwreck. He is a disaster” as a bartender. So in order to get moving on his newest career, Charles headed to a bar and asked for a little demonstration. By the end, he was stumbling out the door yelling “I am a bartender” while he swayed and waited for a cab. I think Miss Robbie may be right!

In the meantime, Jenae insisted it was time for Tim to get involved in the wedding plans. It was clear that tension was building between them. Feeling overwhelmed, Jenae hired wedding planners and by the time they were partly through the first meeting, the planners were already making notes to find a counselor to help Tim and Jenae survive the planning…especially after Jenae mentioned there would be around 400 people at the wedding. Counseling doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. As they looked at venues, Tim couldn’t be more miserable. He really felt it was being rushed and just wasn’t excited. Something was clearly going on. Jenae was focused on trying to get all the tasks completed and Tim was barely able to hold a smile. Eventually he let Jenae in on the issue. He had a lot on his mind and with the new baby he wasn’t sure it was the right time. Understandably Jenae felt Tim wasn’t making them a priority. Everyone knows how the rest plays out. By the end of the episode, Tim decided Jenae was important enough to tell her that he would do his best to help out. It was a great start!

As the cook-off began, Miss Robbie was still not feeling well and was at home. With her cook filling in for her, she stuck with simple menu items. Tim felt this was him moment to shine. He was going up against the creator of “Sweetie Pie’s” and his own mama. To no one’s surprise, Tim fried almost everything! “Old school is about to get their ass kicked by new school,” he boasted.

The rules were simple. No one was supposed to know who cooked what, but Tim blew it. He made sure everyone knew. Family, friends and co-workers voted on the food.  In the end Tim came out with more votes although Robbie was convinced that Tim cheated and I totally think she deserves a rematch!

Even crazier than all the cook-offs and wedding snappiness, it got super intense as the preview for next week aired and Tim actually hit Andre. As someone who is a strong advocate against domestic violence, I’m not sure how this will play out for me but I have grown to love this family. Tim…don’t screw this up for me!
