OWN TV Shows

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to view Iyanla Fix My Life with multiplatinum hip-hop artist  DMX, airing this Saturday night on OWN.  Throughout the entire hour, we were riveted and watching and we know you will be too.  Iyanla is back and powerful with an open heart and a deep desire to move people to fix their lives.   There is no pretense.  This isn’t the fake reality that you see all around you…or the explosive reality of the 1990′s talk show circuit.  This is showing up…to real lives with real issues and having an amazing team that help to shine light on the lessons and the humanity in the moment.

Iyanla Fix My Life – this episode will make you realize that there is more to fixing your life than you think.  Tune in and don’t miss it!  Here’s a preview of the premier airing this Saturday night on OWN at 9pm, 8pm central.

In last night’s Our America, Lisa Ling brought us stories of two different children – one young 10 year old boy dreaming of baseball in Florida and the other, a young 13 year old girl in California – on opposite sides of the country but both with the same story.  Their innocence was taken away from them.  As these now adults talked about the abuse and faced the memories with Lisa Ling once again, the pain was evident and the detour that their lives had taken was clear.   And as Lisa asked the questions and told their stories, she did so with understanding that while many years may have passed, the wounds are still healing and the aftereffects are written in the sadness in their eyes.

As I watched the program, my first reaction was of how brave these two survivors were.  To tell their stories and share their impact will save others who may find themselves in similar situations.  Parents will be more aware and ask questions.  People around will pay attention and speak up.  Society will pay closer attention…because the days of minding your own business and turning away when something appears to be going wrong is changing and needs to change.  Everyone should be watching…and everyone should be extra  aware of what’s going on with our younger generation.

As Lisa Ling continued on with the stories, my heart broke for Leeronnie and the other little boys who were abused in the Red Sox clubhouse for many years as others turned their heads or laughed and made jokes of what was going on.  It goes beyond my understanding how grown-ups could see and know that this was happening and not step up and see that this – these young men who so idolized being on the field and in that space – could be their children…or them.  Why didn’t anyone speak up for them?  Where were the voices of the bystanders?

As the stories were carefully brought to light, the sadness of Kristen’s story of a female coach threatening her and her family was awakening.  From a quaint little Walnut Creek neighborhood – with nearby Berkley University where students standup and fight for the most basic rights, this young girl was simply fighting to survive a possessive, manipulative, and criminal couch, Julie – a middle school teacher who deserves to be exactly where she is – in prison.  Where were the signs?  How can we do better in the future?  This needs to stop…

From the beginning, my heart was so extremely proud of these two individuals, Leeronnie and Kristen, for sharing their stories and standing UP in their truth to shed light for so many others.  Let their strength and courage be the ripple that starts the wave and let this same strength and courage allow each and every one of us to stand UP and speak UP when we see something that we think is suspect or wrong.  Let’s use this courage to be the voice for those who have smaller voices or no voices at all.  This could be exactly why you are here – to save that life and to be that voice.

Our America with Lisa Ling is a Learning Experience

by Guest Blogger on February 25, 2013

Lisa Ling is back and we’re very excited. It’s hard to believe its already Season 4 of Our America, one of the flagship shows of the OWN network. Lisa and her crew allow us as viewers to peek inside the world of places we would never otherwise see and have a look around without judgment or sensationalism. From people who practice bondage to childhood obesity, Lisa explores the tough topics with a gentle and loving touch, and incredible sense of dignity and respect. At a recent press event she revealed some of the episodes this season and discussed what she hopes people will learn from each of them.

Lisa would like her viewers will take something away from each episode just as she has. “I’m proud of the fact that during every single episode of Our America you will learn something. There’s take away value to everything. I feel like I’ve become a better person as a result because I’m more understanding and open-minded. And my hope is that people who are watching this will do that as well.”

While most people, like Lisa herself, assume people who practice bondage are freaks, this season Our America explores the subculture. With the success of Fifty Shades of Grey, Lisa couldn’t help but wonder who these people were who were indulging is this behavior. What she found out was they are just normal people, lawyers, doctors, your neighbors and co-workers. Lisa stated, “There are things that all of us probably wouldn’t want to share with the rest of the world or there are things about us that we think other people would judge us on. And our whole purpose is to try and allow people to watch our shows without judgment so that they might have a better understanding of how people live.”

Lisa opened up her own life to the camera when she featured her dad, Doug, in the episode about seniors. She said, “The intention of this show is to give a people a sense of how different people are dealing with aging because it will inevitably happen with us and already so many of us are trying to figure out how to deal with our own aging parents. And I’m just so grateful that OWN has allowed me to do this because this is the show that I’ve been so, so excited to do.”

In another episode Lisa explores one of the more than 3500 new religions that have sprouted up across the country in recent years. She stated, “We get that sense that people these days are really struggling and they’re really hungry for purpose and meaning and there are a lot of broken souls out there.” She continued, “It was fascinating on the level that to see how people who are so broken… feel so drawn to these spiritual practices or one charismatic leader. To watch that process and how easily people can be influenced by these ‘religious’ practices is really interesting… These are people who say that the apocalypse is around the corner and they are willing to die for Christ.”

Lisa also follows the lives of two adult men who were abused as children and how it had affected their lives. She divulged, “Our hope with this show is that parents will get a sense of what to look for in their own kids or least have the conversation about people who you can trust. I’ve never seen a show about this topic like the one that we’ve down and so I’m really proud of this one.”

In “Families of Killers” Lisa sits with parents and relatives of people who have committed unspeakable crimes. She interviews the brother of the Unabomber and coincidentally is in the home of a man whose son shot up a school just as the events of the Newtown tragedy are occurring. She recalled, “I was in his house about to start the interview when we got the news and we incorporated that into the story because for him it was like he could actually recount what happened to him and you could easily see that happening with the father of Adam Lansa when Newtown happened.”

Lisa knows it’s difficult to sometimes have pity on these people but she said, “We spend time with the families of people and try and better understand the kinds of things that they’ve gone through… Imagine that grief and that pain of showing up at a school looking for your kid only to find out your kid is the killer.” She once again goes in without judgment to hear their side of the story.

In the last episode of the season, Lisa explores the topic of polyamory — the practice of having numerous simultaneous loving relationships. Lisa revealed, “This show, of all of the shows on alternative lifestyles, has provoked the most conversation amongst my friends. Because when you really think about it, it really goes into whether monogamy is realistic for people. Certainly there are people who are in really happy, monogamous relationships, but there’s a reason why our divorce rate is as high as it is.” She continued, “With this show what was interesting to me is the notion of can one single person fulfill all of your needs? If we’re really going to dig deep inside of us most of us would probably say, ‘No it’s impossible.’”

Ling encourages viewers to watch with an open mind and says, “Every show has been a different kind of experience but each one goes really, really deep… I’m really excited about this season.”

Tune into the premiere of Our America with Lisa Ling on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. Central on OWN.

Ken Wingard is one of the designers on OWN’s Home Made Simple. He specializes in designs on a budget and has done several kid-friendly projects on the show. A new dad himself, he know how important it is to make a room feel comfy and inviting without breaking the bank.

In a recent one-on-one interview he told us, “There’s lots of decorating out there — move the truck and it’s all fabulous and all that. But I find that stuff actually very irritating to watch because I can’t do that. I’m not about to drop $50,000 on new kitchen cabinets. Any of my friends will tell I’m the cheapest person on the face of the planet and do I everything myself. So this is the perfect show because we go in there and what we do is real. I’m figuring it out. I’m doing it with stuff I find in their garage. I’m showing them how to do it and it’s nice. It’s inspirational even for me to see people take control of their own spaces and the self-confidence that it builds.”

He gave us ten tips for creating a kid-friendly space:

1. Approach kid’s design from an adult point of view.
“There’s a lot of kids designs out that are, in my opinion, too immature. I was a full blown adult before I was a parent and I want my own and my kid’s rooms to be of the same fabric. I don’t want to walk into a kids room and all of a sudden have it be so disjointed from the rest of the house and from who I am as a person… So I approach it much more from a sophisticated point of view. My little girls room is sage green walls with white birch trees with pink and blue polka dots floating all around. So it’s whimsical for her but it’s pleasant for me. But I did this when she was born and she can still have that on her wall until she’s a teenager and I’m not going to have to redecorate it five different times.”

2. Include the child in the design process.
“I think it’s important. We did an episode with three kids and we were making bed rolls for them… and I took the colors that I was doing in the room and I put them on paint sticks for them. And we went to the fabric store and I taught them, ‘These are the colors of the room so why don’t we look for fabrics that have these colors.’ And they loved it. I talked about color and matching and coordinating and they helped stuffed the bed rolls when they were done. So they bought into the whole project and it’s very educational for them and it makes the room feel like theres.”

3. Let the teens have their way.
“When it’s up to the teen years, just let them go for it. They’re not going to be around for much longer. Let them have what they want. Make it cool. Make it hip. There are plenty of other battles you’re going to have with teenager, what color to paint the room does not need to be one of them…  The truth is you give him that he wants, he feels it’s cool. He’s going to be hanging out at your house with his friends as opposed to him being off who knows where. So it bodes well for the parents to give the kids what they want in the teen years.” [read more…]

This Week’s Pop Culture Moment with Lisa Ling

by Guest Blogger on February 21, 2013

Each week we take a look around our pop culture world and try to find one moment that stood out as the most inspiring. It might be a celebrity who is doing charitable things, a TV shows that inspires us to be better or a philosophy that we should all strive to live by. Here is this week’s most inspiring pop culture moment.

This week Season 4 of Our America with Lisa Ling premiered, and once again the show delved into a topic not many people feel comfortable discussing, but somehow made it approachable and nonjudgmental. Lisa tackled the topic of bondage in the season opener and will follow it up with shows about childhood obesity, families of killers, polyamorists and martyrs for Christ. Each week Our America explores the worlds we don’t even know exist and opens our minds to the lives of those around us.

At a recent press event Lisa talked about the new season saying, “In our fourth batch of shows — the quality of our shows, the writing — we’ve all honed our skills even more so. And I’m so proud of what we’re producing in this fourth batch.”

She continued, “This is the proudest I’ve ever been of the work that I’ve done. I’ve been in this business for well over 20 years and this is the culmination of all the things that I’ve had the privilege and fortune of being able to do.”

Ling said she gets the access to the people she covers because the reputation of the show proceeds her. She said, “We treat everyone we feature on our show with dignity and respect, irrespective of what they may have been accused of doing or what they’re currently doing. I know that they appreciate it and they know that we’re not going to exploit their stories.”

She credits the style of the show with creating a place for viewers to come and learn. “Our show is the least loud and sensational show on TV. If you really think about it, our shows are slow moving and they’re beautifully shot and they’re very introspective… It’s unlike any other show in that way because it breaths and allows you to get immersed in the lives of these people.”

Lisa looks forward to doing more and more shows for the series because as she said, “There are no shortage of stories in this country.”

And the driving force behind the show’s continuous success is the passion. “Our teams consist of deeply passionate people. It drives me. It is my baby. It is the thing about which I am most passionate and everyone on our team feels the same way.”

She added, “Everyone on my teams knows that opportunities like this come around never. Literally never. If this goes away we might not ever get another chance to do this kind of programming and not sound cliche but I really don’t think we’d be able to do it anywhere but [OWN]. This network has gone through its ups and downs — and thank goodness it’s on this amazing uptick right now — but regardless of the roller coaster that it’s been on, it’s been so supportive of the show and for that we will always be grateful.

Tune into Our America with Lisa Ling Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST/9 p.m. Central on OWN.

The worldwide news that Lance Armstrong is sitting down with Oprah for a heart to heart on Next Chapter has started making headlines worldwide.  Announced via Twitter and press release on Monday night, OWN will be airing a 90 minute special on Thursday, January 17th – taking Next Chapter out of it’s Sunday time slot and bringing the interview to the world as quickly as possible.  For this special interview, OWN will be airing the episode not only on its cable channel but it will also be available worldwide on the web via Oprah.com.

While the talk and speculation of what ground will be covered will be banter with the media over the next week, the truth is that the world knows Oprah’s style.  She doesn’t shy away from the hard questions…and there is a reason why Oprah’s team have already scheduled an interview that hasn’t even happened yet (to the best of our knowledge) for 90 minutes.  Oprah and Lance have a lot to talk about.  And Oprah’s all about asking the questions that the world wants to know.  This is one interview that will talked about and referenced during Lance’s legacy – no matter what is said.  And it’s one interview that you do not want to miss.  Good luck Oprah.  Good luck Lance.  Enjoy the moment and leave everything you have on the field.  And for the rest of us, don’t forget to watch January 17th at  9/8c or watch live on Oprah.com.  We know we will be watching #LanceOnOWN.

My Life is a Joke brings a little heart and soul along with laughter to OWN.  Following five comedians from Chicago, this eclectic group of women dips beyond the surface of standup to offer a deeper dive into the world of comedy.

As the cameras roll, they take us out of the dark comedy club audience and turn up the lights to give us a look at what it’s like to follow your dream in the world of laughter.  From the serious side of living your dream to digging deep for that new joke that will work on stage, in the hour you will find yourself settling in and really liking these women who are highlighted.  Sharing personal stories of the loss of a child…looking for acceptance from parents who may not be able to see beyond the lifestyle stereotype…getting the call from SNL for a 4 minute audition…getting the nod for your first paying performance…  All these women live to make others laugh…that is what they want to do in life.  This is their passion.

And while the hour goes by too fast and shows us a peek into the hearts and lives of these women, you will be reminded that we all are in search of our own thing that makes us feel successful and worthy of standing on our own stage in the middle of life.  We are all looking for the courage to live up to our fullest potential and we all want the laughter and smiles that come from knowing that we have made it…and that we are right where we are supposed to be. Bravo to OWN for reminding us that living our dreams goes beyond the surface and that there are those who are out there standing on their stage and going for it…because you only live once!

Here’s the first five minutes from OWN.

OWN premiered another new show last night – Lost and Found and for an hour out of my busy day, I found myself looking at the details of other people’s lives.  So many small things or moments mean so much and often, we forget to take notice.  It made me turn from a very busy and emotional day to see the world from a different perspective…thinking of others and their journey and what they had lost…and now found.

During this hour long episode, there are 3 different stories that were highlighted.  All equally beautiful, the first was that of two young girls who were saved from the Holocaust by being sent off alone in the night and who forged a bond during their long voyage to the United States were reunited after more than 70 years.  Their reunion came from a group of students, carefully given the lesson that their actions can make a difference.  Like a shared history where words can go unspoken, these strong women reminded me of my mother and aunt…a bond and connection that covers any length of time.  When they finally found each other, it was as if they never parted…and as if a piece of the heart was filled back up.

The other two stories chronicled a lost letterman jacket and the significance to a young girl many years ago who had lost all of her memories and mother in a fire…and who’s jacket signified her accomplishments and legacy of a world long gone.  Another amazing story came from England where the whimsical release of a celebration balloon with a young girl’s name and address attached traveled over 150 miles to end up in the hands of another young girl with the same name who was the same age.  The Universe united these two lifelong friends in a unique way…and in the process reminds the rest of us that everything happens for a reason…and even the smallest of details may have the biggest impact.  There is someone guiding us…and even if one day, something is lost…you never know when it will show up.

OWN has started finding sure-footed programming and little by little, they are rolling it out into the world.  Heart warming, real stories…the kind that we would catch in the afternoon back in the days of  The Oprah Winfrey Show.   Bravo OWN.  Lost and Found feels like a good fit.

From OWN: Here’s a Sneak Peek at the first 5 minutes…
