OYou Boot Camp

Finding a Little Youth and Sparkle from OYou

by paula on December 17, 2011

After OYou this year, I felt like Christmas came early and that I had a treasure chest full of jewels and gifts!  It was like I was a kid again…a grown up kind of kid…who loves all of the pampering and the wonderful things that come in pretty packages and make you feel great.  A pile of gifts came from L’Oreal who gave us some youth in a bottle and some sparkle for lives.  For a few weeks, the pretty pile sat on my dresser…just waiting for me to dive in.  Once I did…it was like Christmas all over again.

While I haven’t added up all of the ‘gems’ from OYou, I have taken notice that L’Oreal included over $100 in products…and let me add, in FANTASTIC products.  Among the treasures was a set of their Youth Code line of moisturizers and some makeup too!  Taking all tips to heart as I enter into my early fortys, the Youth Code trio that was tucked in my bag is just amazing.  The day lotion with SPF, the eye and the day and night cream have changed the way that I look!  I swear I think that I am looking refreshed and rested…which is not easy to do as we enter into the stressful holiday season.  Let me assure you…it has nothing to do with the hours that I keep or the amount of sleep that I don’t get (I’m working on it, Dr. Oz).  I am sure that with less stress and more sleep plus plenty of water and daily exercise and some deep breaths and meditation might help if I incorporated them into my life, but the Youth Code is a little bit of a secret weapon when I seem to drop off my OWN personal list.  Bob Greene even gives the advice to  “find a good day and nighttime moisturizer for your face” as one of the secrets in his “20 Years Younger” book and L’Oreal helped make that happen.  It’s like I’ve put myself back on my list to take care of myself…and I didn’t even know it!

But…that wasn’t all!  Add the One Sweep blusher duo and the Le Gloss lip gloss and the travel size Elnett Satin hairspray and I’m not sure that I’ve ever looked better.  OK…maybe when I was 18 but as a grown up, it’s always nice to slow down and pay a little more attention to your OWN self.  L’Oreal reminded me of that by putting a little of their OYou magic into my life.  Thank you L’Oreal…

So, if you are looking at adding a little something to your OWN stocking this year…or even to someone else in your life that you love, be a little indulgent and give them something that will change their life without them really even knowing it.  When you slow down enough to do something nice for yourself or for those you love, it changes the world around you…and sometimes that change can even come from the beauty aisle.

At OYou 2011 in Atlanta, TFal gave out the most adorable little itty bitty omelet pan…and until recently, it laid on the kitchen counter looking cute while I wondered what I would do with it.  A Christmas tree ornament?  A ping pong paddle?   Well…one day, I broke down and used it and let me say, life hasn’t been the same since!  Perfect eggs.  Perfect pancakes.  Perfect little round omelets.  Perfection in a little bitty package!  Watch out…I’m thinking of having a baking day of breakfast sandwiches because this little pan makes it so easy and so fun!  It’s one thing to eat something that is amazing…but when it LOOKS amazing too…well, the whole experience just gets THAT MUCH better!

AND…like that isn’t enough from the TFal family…they handed out these teeny bags of granola.  About 1-2 tablespoons of a perfect mix of nuts, granola and dried fruit.  So busy walking the floor, I just kept smiling at the snack pushers and taking their offerings and putting them in my bag.  Once home, I used one each morning to add to my oatmeal…turning it from ordinary to extra yummy…without a lot of extra calories! So, happy to report that I’ve figured out the recipe and have added a container to the counter-top.

Thank you TFal for turning any day into an extraordinary day with my little omelet pan and a new recipe for oatmeal pizazz.  The perfect OYou gift to walk away with and change my life…seriously, perfect little pancakes people!  :)

Medium City Park / Butterflies A great RUME bag was part of the morning giveaway at the OYou conference in Atlanta. As we walked in and found our morning seat, a pretty little bag, all wrapped up with our OYou journal and amazing (erasable) pen was waiting for us. DELIGHT…but I never knew just how wonderful it would really be. I think I love you, RUME.

As soon as the reusable grocery bags were available, I bought them. Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Publix to just name a few…local merchants, breast cancer awareness, humane society fundraisers…I have them all. But I never HAVE them when I NEED them. They almost NEVER make it back into the car…I’m just not THAT organized. But…my life has changed. OYou gave me a RUME bag and now…I think I’m in love.

If you can form a habit in 20 days, I’ve done it. RUME goes in my purse everywhere I go. I just wrap it up and throw it in. When we come home…I empty her, fold her up and get her ready for her next adventure out. RUME, you are amazing. You’ve changed my life. You’ve helped me make my life easier…I’m pretty sure that I love you…but it’s only been a few weeks…and I don’t say the “L” word until at least 60 days into a relationship…but I am changed and better for you in my life…so we are off to a great start.

If you don’t have your own RUME, I suggest that you go an introduce yourself to one.  I’m pretty sure you will think you LOVE yours too…

Last Sunday, I wrote down these personal OYou! lessons that I learned from the day…and that I wanted to remember for next year’s OYou.  They really have nothing to do with all of the amazing information gained, but more to do with my tired feet.  Still, I thought I’d share how my tired mind works along with some photos.  (Brody, these photos are for you!)  Here are my tired feet lessons…

  • Flip flops are a foots best friend especially after so much walking around.  OYou! 2012 – Living Your Best Life in Flip Flops!  I see it already…  I’m pretty sure that I could sell it to Adam Glassman… it is possible to live your best life in flip flops…or at least put them into your bag and give your feet the gift when you need to.
  • If I had a wig, I cam pretty sure that every once in awhile I’d have a good hair day and it wouldn’t get “all flat or frizzy” from the southern humidity.
  • It doesn’t matter how long you prepare for a big event, you still never have enough time to lose enough weight, find the right outfit or figure out the questions to ask…so just do your best and go with it.
  • Eat a little something – even if you are too excited to eat – because coffee doesn’t sit well on an empty stomach.
  • People are people and real authentic people make you feel like your own real authentic true self.
  • Smile. Breathe. Just be you.

Electric!  That is the one word that comes to mind when I think of the OYou conference in Atlanta this past weekend.  A wave began at the conference center…a wave we are still riding high and hope to catch you up in as well.  As my sister and I share our OYou joy with you over the next few weeks, keep in mind that we all are the architects of change within our own lives.    So get ready… But before we start pouring out the lessons we amassed at the conference, I want to share with you our incredible journey and how Gayle King was the one who made that dream come true.

When it was announced that Oprah was making an appearance at the OYou conference, my sister and I grabbed a cup of coffee and pulled a chair up to our favorite talking table.  How exciting!  All of our OWN & O Magazine favorites were going to be only a few hundred miles away from us.   Now it is important to note my sister and I are not the kind of people who wait hours to see a celebrity and would never consider walking up and interrupting their lives….call it shyness or a sense of boundaries. Truth be told, we are totally opposite of our mother who ran in the streets with the original MTV DJs in Vegas.  BUT we didn’t want to miss out on the excitement of OYou and Oprah.

Before we got up from the table, we decided that we were going to work towards making our OYou dream come true with a crowd fundraiser and an O You! Boot Camp challenge.  We had eleven weeks until the conference and O Magazine had exactly eleven speakers scheduled.  Suddenly it was all lining up.   But during our Suze Orman week of the challenge, reality set in. We both knew that this wasn’t in the budget and Suze would easily “DENY” the trip.  So as the week came to an end, we came to terms with our decision and pushed forward.  Suddenly, our OYou Boot Camp became our OYou experience.

As my sister wrote the last entry for the OYou Boot Camp, we both tried not to focus on the fact that the OYou conference was beginning in 5 days without us.   Surrendering it all knowing that God had a different plan, we focused on the excitement of the beginning of Rosie and Lifeclass that night.  THIS was now our focus…but, God had a different plan…and the plan was Gayle King.

Within two hours of posting the final OYou entry, everything changed!  O Magazine contacted us.  In what felt like slow motion, we were soon on the call with an Assistant Editor telling us that Gayle had seen our blog and personally wanted to pay for us to come to O You!  Now, for all of you who believe that this kind of thing doesn’t happen…START BELIEVING.

JOY = You were seen.  You were heard.  You matter.

There is JOY RISING here at the Daily OWN!

When we met Gayle with hugs, smiles and a ton of thank you’s, we found ourselves in a surreal moment.  But the odd thing was that we weren’t nervous.   Instead we felt humbled and grateful and at home with both who we were and the energy that was surrounding us.  There we stood in front of someone who changed our lives.  Gayle CHANGED our lives.

There have been moments as we try to meet the goals that we set for ourselves with this blog that we wonder if we are being heard and wondering if we were heading in the right direction.  Whispers would tell us, “Just keep doing what you’re doing…I’ve got this”    All along this journey the whispers have been loud, yet when you get tired -which can happen with only 2 sisters covering all of OWN programs and inspiration – that is when you start to question the world.  But BELIEVE…because if your whisperer tells you, “I’ve got this,” it just might mean that Gayle King is right around the corner.

Sitting on this story was not easy!  Of course we wanted to immediately tell our readers…but we wanted to make sure that Gayle was okay with it.  While Gayle is one of the most open and personable people out there, we wanted to protect her generosity and the story.  But with a nod of approval from a wonderful assistant, we decided to share our story with you.  If you ever wonder about Gayle making her OWN wildest dreams come true, stop wondering and start believing.

  1. Sit with yourself.  Give yourself 30 minutes at the beginning of each day to sit still, have a cup of coffee or tea, and be open to your God whispers.
  2. Financially, it’s time to start living below your means but within your needs.
  3. Be confident enough to start bringing things to YOU.  Confidence = Energy = Power.
  4. Track your passion through your life.  What do you see? What have you wanted to do? How does that show up in your life?  Look at the path.
  5. Be open.  If you stay open to it, sometimes your passion finds you.
  6. Visualize a better life for yourself.
  7. Get 2 garbage bags.  Spend 15 minutes a day for 1 week filling each of them  – 1 with trash, 1 with donations.  Get rid of them both at the end of the week.
  8. Keep Getting Up!  With everything that doesn’t take you out, you get stronger. Strength = POWER.
  9. Recognize that you are worthy because you were born.  You are worthy of living your best life.
  10. Stop living out of the story of your past.  Have the courage to step up and the courage to step out of your past and move forward.

OYou! 2011 Goodies from AMAZING Sponsors

by paula on October 18, 2011

Our OYou! 2011 experience was O-Mazing…and had us thankful that we had lots of extra room in the our suitcases for all of the amazing sponsor freebies!  The only thing missing from the picture is SPANX, which gave away a FREE pair of SPANX to every attendee!  (I know!)  The line was crazy long all day…but they made sure that everyone was taken care of by taking our names, sizes and address.  Just amazing.  But not as amazing as what Sara Blakely, Founder & Owner / SPANX…had to say in one of the sessions but that’s a whole other story!

OMG, OYou!

by patricia on October 14, 2011

We are HERE! I am amazed at how my life path has brought me to Atlanta this weekend. Sitting humbly in my beautiful hotel room, I realize the only thing missing is the OWN Network. Finally I understand how frustrated viewers get when they don’t get their Rosie, Oprah’s Lifeclass and all of the other gems. Maybe this is God’s way of telling me that I can’t blog on the shows because I need to SLEEP so I am ready for all the “A-HA” adventures. Although I am only blocks away from some of my favorite O Magazine & OWN teachers, I am not nervous. I am sure within a few hours the nervousness will set in, but for now I am completely at peace and grateful for life…and our O-You angel that brought us to this place in time.

Tomorrow is the BIG day. I will be surrounded by the spiritual mentors I have come to respect and love. AND I will be doing my best to bring you all as much of it as I can. I am certain that the fresh new notebook I brought will be filled with life lessons that we ALL will be able to carry with us. So, be patient and know…the lessons will come. Just give it time.
